Founded in 1952 by Roger Bacon High School friends Bill Wersel and Stan Handorf, the Village Landscape Service Company focused on lawn maintenance and grass-cutting. When the owners moved to Springdale, Ohio on Sharon Road, the owners changed its name to Sharon Nursery Company in 1959 and added landscape installation to their expanding services.
The prospering landscape/maintenance company soon outgrew its location. In 1963, Bill and Stan packed and moved to a 30-acre farm alongside I-71 in Maineville, OH. The nursery and garden store remain located there today. “At the time, our friends and family thought we were crazy buying a farm -- in the middle of nowhere -- for the purpose of opening a garden center,” joked Bill Wersel. Their wisdom however, soon proved their friends wrong.

From the middle of nowhere to a thriving suburbia with the Eiffel Tower in its back yard
Within one year of opening the garden center in Maineville, they were approached by a group of visionary developers. The developers planned to open an amusement park on 364 acres, with an Eiffel Tower (one-third the size of the original Eiffel Tower in Paris) as the landmark. The developers acquired 14 acres from Sharon Nursery Company to help create the Kings Island exit off I-71. Paramount’s Kings Island is now the premier family theme and water park in the Midwest. More than three million guests visit the park each year. Due in part to Paramount King’s Island’s success, the surrounding communities prospered and grew in population, causing Warren County to become one of the fastest-growing counties in the Midwest.
Pleased with its visible new neighbor, the nursery was, nonetheless, again pinched for space. They ventured even farther north to purchase an additional 80-acre farm outside of Lebanon, Ohio to expand the nursery’s plant growing operations. Sharon Nursery was now a full-service landscaping company providing complete landscape installation and design services, a fully stocked garden center, and a wholesale service providing plant materials to other members of the nursery industry.
The Next Generation
Bill and Stan are now enjoying retirement. Their sons -- Tom, Tony, Mike and Rob Handorf, and Bill Wersel Jr.-- are now the co-owners of Sharon Nursery Company. The company continues to make improvements in the products and services offered, but the work-ethic and commitment to service instilled by their fathers lives on. Now, as a third-generation of Handorf’s and Wersel’s are becoming involved in the family-business, these same values will carry Sharon Nursery into the future.
